WILFUL NEGLECT
4 OP AN INFANT CHILD. Police headquarters yesterday received a report 4f a case of wilful neglect'of an infant child aged three yearn. The case was dealt with at the Picton Court last week, when Eangi Matangi . and his son ltalph were each fined <5!10 for neglecting tho child. Tho evidence revaled ft very shocking state of affaics. Marangi lived at Waikawa, where the child was born. The mother died shortly after its birth. M.frangi then went to Picton and left tho child in charge of his son. As a result of complaints Sergeant Scott proceeded to Waikawa and there found the child, which was mentally defective in a filthy conditkm. It was poorly clothed, filthy dirty, and the body was tovjrod with wounds-and scars. Tho «Tifl<l was removed to.a hospital and has now been committed to the Nelson Industrial Homo. TlPe Magistrate (Mr. P. L. Hollings, S.M.), in fining the'defendants, said that tho case was a very shocking 0110 and that Marangi senior was primarily responsible for the- neglect. He directed both defendants to share the cost of the treatment oi' the child and also ordered the father to contribute 10s. per week towards its maintenance.
