REMARK ABLE PROGRESS.
Passongcrs by the steamer Eastern, which arrived at Sydney from the East some days ago, referred to what they describe as "the really wonderful adverse" niado by the Japanese during the last three years. This applies most particularly to manufacturing industries, the progress in • this connection being most remarkable, Places, which, in the early days of the war, were quiet little towns, have blossomed forth in tho interveniiiff time into lingo manufacturing cities, their populations quadrupled in many instances, and eacli with an ever-increasing volume of trade. A ix>rt of great interest is Sandakan. which was included : .n the itinerary of the Eastern for the first time, mid is now to he. a port of call on both northward and southward voyages. Sandakan, the capital of British North Borneo, was the headquarter? and coaling station of (he British East Indies souadron of tho Royal Navy, and is chiefly remarknMo for its scenic beauty, and for its polyp/tot population, almost every colour and race under the sun being represented there.
