HOUSING PROBLEM
CITY COUNCIL'S LATEST PLAN. The housing problem Hias grown to such an extent of late that the City Council is now forced to lake extraordinary measures in order, to ease tho situation. The council has decided to facilitate the conversion into temporary dwellings of such buildings or portions of buildings as* may be suitable for the purpose. The structures contemplated by the council aro business premises, office buildings, warehouses, in general, constructions under different by-laws as to air space, etc.. which apply to ordinary dwolling-houscs.' The council has the' power to waive the enforcement of tho by-laws in the interest of tho community at large, and in the cases of families living in single rooms it is considered better for the time being to havo the air space inside than outside. Of course, it is necessary to obtain tho owner's consent before anything can be done, but' it is hoped that owners of suitable buildings will not stand m tho way of converting such portions as aro available into temporary habitations. Owners who can help are asked, to communicate, with the acting-city engineer, as stated in an advertisement in this issue.
