TIME WASTED
CIVIL SERVANTS LACK LIFTS. A suggestion that the country -was losing thousands of pounds yearly through tho waste of time involved in civil sor-•T-ants walking up and dovra stairs at the Government Buildings vriis made in tho House of Representatives by Mt, H. G. Ell (Christchurch South). ' Mr. Ell said that many highly paid officers were housed on the upper floors of the big wooden building, and they 'had to use tho etairs and. 60 waste time because there was no lift. The ifjnister of Public Works (Sir William Fraser) replied that everybody know the big building was inadequate and out of date. It was not nearly big enough, and Government offices wero scattered all over the town. Ho believed the wise course would bo to rebuild and place all tho public Departments in one big building on tho present.site. This was a matter that would have to be faced after the elections. Tho cow Records Office, orcotod alongside the Government Buildings, was a temporary structure, occupying ground that tho Government had obtained, % exchango with the C!ty Council; with a view to later building operations. He believed the new, bunding that was required would have to bo erected in soctlons.
