DIPHTHERIA IN WELLINGTON DJ STRICT. This has been one of the worst winters for diphtheria that Wellington has experienced.' There may have been times when there has been a greater concentration of eases at the one time, but the tally of cases month after month and week after week has been very steady during tlio cold weather, and it is hoped that with the approach ui' warmer weather the number of cases will decrease. There is nothing to be alarmed about at present, but it shows how wis? the Wellington Hospital authorities were to erect a new diphtheria hospital owing to tho continued prevalence of the disease every winter. During, the week ended at noon on Monday there were ; 37 casts of diphtheria' reported in the Wellington heal Hi ■ dislrict, and the chart shows it to be lnirly widespread. Other infections diseases were reported as follow:—Scarlet fever, i; enteric, G: tuberculosis, 5; influenza, S3; lethargic I encephalitis, 1; measles,-17. • In respect to, influenza, there is still evidence of the disease in h mild form about, hut. the number of cases in which fithe ailment has taken a pneumonic form is almost negligible. Here is the retura for the week ended at noon on Monday: : Wairua, 1 mild; Waitara, 1 mild; E'itliam, 1 mild; Hawera, 1 pneumonic and 1 mild; Marton. 1 mild; Hnntcrville, -1 pneumonic; Wellington, 11 mild; Petone. 1 mild; Palnierstnn North, 1 mild. The number of cases of measles reported is unusual, tit the 17 10 were re- • ported from Wairau (Marlborough).
