NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (From Our Special Correspondents.) WAIRARAPA At a largely-attended general meeting held in the Anzac.Club. IPeathorston, on Monday,-the Mayor (Mr. .1. W. Card) presiding, it was decided, on the motion uf- Mr. \Y. E. Bidwill, that a general committee, consisting of representatives ol tho Wairarapa Anzac Club and the citizens of the Foatherston district, cooperate in promoting the success of the "welcome home" to'be accorded returned soldiers in tho club on November i. .Mr. O. J. Carlyon, hon. secretary of tho Anzac Club, was elected as secretary, and Mesdames W. J. Martin and Q. Donald, chairwoman and vice-chairwoman respectively, of the ladies' committee. It waa resolved that a special iiivifation bo extended to Brigadier-General H-art, LieutColonels Cowles, Saunders, and M'Lean, Hon. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C., .Messrs. G. R. Sykes,and J. T. M. Hornsby, M.P.'s. It is hoped that relumed soldiers from all parts of the Wairarapa will be present, and visiting soldiers from other centres will be made welcome. During the quarter ended September 30 the amount sued for in the Mastertou Magistrate's Court was .£2077 os. lid.. and the amount recovered X72.S 13s. lid. The number of plaints issued was 82; number of orders made (other than judgment summonses), i; distresi warrants, 10; judgment summonses, 2; irarrante of committal, 2; summonees .served by bailifi's over two miles, 23; distress warrants executed by bailiffs over two miles, i; number executed within two miles, 15 j writs of committal executed by bailiff, 2. The amount of civil fees paid in stamps was <£82 Bs. Fifty-one wises were heard by the Stipendiary .Magistrate, no eases being brought before justices of the pence. Eight malofi and one female were arrested in the Mastcrton area, and 71 males and 8 females received judgment summonses. Two old-age pensions and C widows' peii. sions wero granted, 51 oid-r.gu pcnsionß were renewed, and application was madt for 15 war pensions.

At the annual meeting of the Musterton Permanent Investment and Building Society, held on Monday, the "ollowing were re-elected directors:—Messrs. W, B, Chennells, AV. E. Chamberlain, E. O. Eton, D. M. Graham, and J. L. Hughea. Messrs. G. W. Sella rs and N. H. James woio re-elected auditors.

The executive of the Wairarapa School Committees' Association has passed the following resolutions to bo forwarded to the Minister of Education (Sir I'rancis Bell), n copy to h< sent also to Sir Walter Buchanan;—"That this association strong, ly protests against the establishment of a technical high school in Mastcrton, and considers a high school pioper tho only suitable institution." Cowles, acted os judges of the fancy costumes, and awarded the prizes as follow:—Bc-rt lady's, Miss Hudloy, camouflage; beat gentleman, Mr. Frank Boyle, Bed Indian. The trophies had been provided bv Mn Frank Ilickards and Mr. L. S. Nichol respectively, both of them being returned souliers. In addition to the ladies mentioned as judges, the chapcrones included: Mesdimes D. Caselberg, W. ill. Booth, and G.-A. Greenwood. The M.C.'s were Captain 11. I'. It- Beetha.ni and Messrs. P. liVvyle and J\ Eickards. It: is anticipated that a considerable sum will be made available to form the nucleus of a fund to provide a Wairarapa roll of honour board at the clubhouse.

Tho Foxton Harbour Board yesterday decided to purchase from the Pa tea Harbour Board a dredge for JiIOOO lhe dredge is a suction purop mounted on a pontoon, with cutter, gear, winches, boiler, engine, water tanks, etc. The pontoon is 00 feet long, 22 feet wide, arid 3 feet 3 inches deep. The boiler working pressure is 1401b. Mias C. B. Mills, M.A., B.Sc, at precrnit mistress of tho Christchurch Technical High School, has been appointed lady principal of tho Palmerston Girls' High School, the new building for which will bo comnleted shortly. Lambert (Sir. Jacobs), a claim for .£74 135., a sum alleged to bo .due for half the amount of commission on certain business transacted by the firm AV. H. Lambert and Co., which transaction plaintiff alleged lie was instrumental in bringing about. When the case was hea-d ln.st week Mr. Jacob* moved that plaintiff he nonsuited on tho grounds that the relationship between plaintiff and defendant was not that of master and servant. Counsel also claimed that plaintiff was a land agent not licensed. In giving judgment His Worship said that in his opinion plaintiff must be nonsuited. From nlaintiffß own statement as to the relationship between himself and Lambert he did not think he was either a servant or a partner, but acting as a land agent, Lambert allowing him the use of his nam* so as to be able to collect the. commission. Archbishop O'Shea, of Wellington, spent the week-end here and conducted a confirmation service on Sunday. At a meeting of the Woodville Jockey Club it was decided to-increase the stakes for the Shorts Handicap at the next meeting to ,-£2OO. It was resolved that the rent of loose boxes for any meeting should be .£l, and that no boxes should lie booked unless paid for.in advance. The ground committee was empowered to have the new grass track (op-dressed. Nutter beat J. C. Bolton and N. Grant bent W. J. Lyon. The total roll in the primary department of the District High School is .ISO. with ah average attendance of 33G. An outbreak of mumps has affected the attendance. Tne alterations made to the eastern wing of the school have considerably improved the building.
