KAMEHAMEHA OF HAWAII

Hawaii is preparing to celebrate by a pageant the memory, now'a century old, of good King Kameliamchii, It is said, one authority declares, that Kamchanieba's father was Kalanikupuapaikalani Kooua, grandson 'of Iteawe, King of Hawaii; and that his mother ivas ICekuaipoiwa, daughter of Kekelakekeoka-lani-a-Keaive, another distinguished personage. But here the historian _ goes back into tradition. What is historically known of King Kamehameha is that ho came to kingship over about half of the present island of Hawaii, and by con. qu«st extended his power over all the islands. He was, it appears, a wise administrator, a maker of good laws, an abolisher ot abuses, and altogether a King* whom modern Hawaii is justified in remembering with a pageant, It was during his reign that whito moil first camo to ihe islands, and the King received them with every consideration and made one 'Of them Ills military adviser and commander of his first fort. Except for the wisdom with which the "King of the Sandwich Islands,' as he would then have been cal!ed, established his Government, the later ■ arrival of the New England missionaries, whoso work did go much to prepare Hawaii for her present development, would have found poorer material to work with.—"Christian S'Cienco Monitor."
