The final of the Mnnawatu golf championship was played on Saturday in a howling gale, botween E. G. Sun and Waltor Scifert. In spite of the wind Sim registered an 86 against his opponent's SS, and finished two .up after a great struggle, in which two long historical putts were lowered on the homo green. The weather in tho afternoon was even worse, rain coming down in torrents, accompanied by heavy gusts of wind. Sim won the first hole in three, inuking him 3 up. Seifert reduced tho third hole. From that until the ninth holo had been reached the fortunes of the players varied, the difference keeping within 2 and 3 up, and. at half-way Sim held the lead by 2. Eventually Sim won the match, 4 •up and 2 to play. The best cards handed in for the medal match on Saturday were:—E. G. Sim, 80—3—77; Colonel Wlme, 91—14—80; R. C. Abraham, 100-20-80; C. Moori, 93-12-81; E. Palmer, 89-18-81; I). G. Moore, 8—6—82; L. A. Abraham, 92—10— 82; R.-G, Moore. 91—7—84; and Colonel Robinson, 92—8—84. l'ive playors have now tied for tho Hardy Cup with G points each. They will play off next Saturday, tlw draw being aa follows:—11. I'. Abraham v. H. N. Watson, E. G. Sim v. R. Pavitt, C. Smith, a bye. The Cloverlea Settlement for returned soldiers, which the Government purchased from the trustees of the late Mr. 1). Buick. has now been subdivided, and is open for selection until the end of this month. Quite a number of aspirants have already inspected the sections with a view to entering the ballot.
When questions regarding the price of of benzine and kerosene, and the mode of convevance thereof, were under discussion bv the Farmers' Union on Saturday, Sir. Baleillie remarked that in his opinion tank ships would have to ba built suitable for the carriage of these oils. He prophesied that before long seamen would refuse to sail on boats containing benzine cargoes unless tanks were supplied.
At the present rate of progress it does not appear likelv that the Mangaliao hvdro-elcctric scheme '.fill bo an accomplished fact for some years, and as Shannon, although the, nearest township to tho source of supply, does not see any prospect of getting lisrht or power from it. in the immediate future, the Borough Council has given instruction to its officers lo make inrjnmei as to when tho council would be likely to get any jrnwer from the works, and in the meantime the engineer was instructed to prepare plans and specifications for a local scheme for supplying the borough with light.
