CHESS
WORKINGMEN'S CLUB V. SOUTH WELLINGTON.
The fourteenth annual match between tho above clubs was played at the Newtown Library on Saturday evening, when a cordial welcome was extended to the visitors by Mr. W. Berry (vice-president of the South Wellington Chess Club). The pairing was then announced, and play was soon in full swing at the thirteen boards. The local c.iplnin won the toss, aiiii liis team had first move at the oddnumbered boards. The earlier results left the issue in doubt, but the visitors gained a useful lead after the adjournment for refreshments, and they wero finally returned winner; by 8} Ramos to ii. The home team was greatly handicapped by the inability of G. I'. Anderson to take part, owing to sickness in his home. As he was to have played at Board 2. all the Newtownites except the captain had to "move up one," which, of course did not improve their chances of victory. At Board 1 Mr. Purchaso utilised the Vienna opening, and a very interestinir struggle ensued. Mr. Barnes gradually established positional advantage iq the mid-gam?, and finally won the exchange with a strong attack, when Mr. Purchas resigned. In returning thanks for tho cordial welcome and kind hospitality extended' to his team, Mr. Barnes mentioned that his side had had all the luck that was going on this occasion, and sympathised with tho home tonm at the loss of Mr. Anderson's valuable services. He trusted thai, the Newtownites would enjoy their visit to tho Working Men's Club next year, and that they would then have whatever luck was in evidence. (Applause.)
