SMOKE CONCERT
The annual 6moke concert of the shipping companies, which, like the annual ■'• football 'match, was allowed to lapse dnr- .-- ing the war period, was revived on Sat- . urday night at Dustin's cafe, Cuba Street. Mr. C. M..Turrell (local man. .: nger of M New Zealand Shipping-Com. : pany) presided, and there were some hundred and ■ fifty present, including .. Captains J. E. Dawson, A. V. The evening was brought to a close at 10.90 o'clock with i the singing of "Auld Lang Syne/' ' The statute .<jf Miss Edith Cavell, to I he erected in St. Martin's Place, opposite I tlio Portrait Gallery, will .'.not be the first work of art of its kind : to occupy tho same site. On July 18,1902, . tho Duke of Cambridge unveiled a ■ statue of Genoral Gordon seated on a ,-carael's back, whicili was set up tem- ', porarily on the island in St. Martin's i Place previous to being shipyd to Khnrj toum. and it now stands on the spot i where the general was murdered. 3?nis !■ statue-of Gordon, 'by Onslow Ford; is a ! Teplica of tho original at Chatham, and I ,was subscribed for by tho readers of I the "Morning Post," who were thanked ! by Lord Kitchener at tho unveiling cere- ' mony for carrying out an idea which he : himself had started.
