WAIRARAPA Owing to the flooded state of the Waiohine River, Hie conference between the Feathcrston Count)' Council awl Ahikouka Hiver Board lias been postponed till Monday morning. Coniirniation lias reached Featherston of the indicated death from drowning of Mrs. Kent-Johnston, wife of Mr. C. J. Kent-Johnston, of Cambridge, and formerly of Feathcrston and Olreytown. The resignation of Mr. A. C. Holms, secretary-treasurer of lho Wairarapa Aulomobilo Association and Mutual Insurance Company, lias beon accepted with regret. Mr. John Strang, of Glenside, Maslerton, lias purchased two two-year-old purebred Shorthorn bulls from Mr. Turner, of Hawke's Hay.
At. a meeting held in Cnrterton on Thursday Ihe Wairarapa hydro-electrical area, as defined by the sub-committee set up fof the- purpose, in conjunction with Messrs. Toogood and Templin, was approved. The .boundaries of the area are constituted by the extreme outer boundaries of the Mauriceville, Masterlon, Feathersloii, and Wairarapa South Counties. • '
Mr. L. W. Hoar was tho successful shave-holder in a ballot for .£.300, free o! interest, held by the Mastertnn No. 1 Workers' Mutual Benefit Building Society on Thursday night. A further cCSM was sold by tender for .£25. Messrs. J. M. Corndine, W. 11. Jackson, W. T. Grundy, E. G. Eton, C. E. Daniell, and J. W. Blackmail have been appointed a deputation to interview tho Minister of Education, Sir Francis Bell (who is not coming to Mnsterton as stated yesterday), in reference to the question of a high school for Mnsterton. In the Magistrate's Court, Mnsterton, yesterday, judgment was given for defendant, with costs, in the case in which damages to the am omit of Mi 2s. were claimed from Dnlgety and Co., Masterton, by Robert Harris, as a result of a recent motor accident. The committee of the Wairarapa Fallen Soldiers' and Cameron Memorial Park Fund lias let the contract for the formation of the sports oval, which is the inTTial step in the making of the park. In order to raiso funds with which to carry on the' work it is proposed to hold a musical picnic in Mnsterton on La-bom-Day, and in the evening a concert in the Opera House, and a "hard-up" dance in Municipal Hall, the proceeds of the three functions to be devoted entirely to the Park Fund. Lieutenant S. Dixon, Sergeants A. J. Spratt and C. Walker, and Private AY". E. Chunn were the guests at a banquet: held on Thursday by His Foresters' Lodge, Mnsterton, in honour of the returned members. Visiting brthrwi were present from Carterton mid such outlying places as Mikimiki and Tinui. The usual toasts were honoured, notable among them being "The Returned Members," responded lo by the gnosis, and "Kindred Societies" and "The Visitors." During the evening musical items were rendered by the following :—Messrs. S. Smi;h. Martigun, L. Travers. Walker, C. Mills, H. Mills. G. Jackson, L. Saunders, W. Curtain. Walsh, B. Chapman, Armstrong, and If. Russell. Mr. T. Vanglia« i'.olpd -is nec'inpanist. Mr. R. 11. Williams, of Timarn,' has been appointed sccretr.vy of the Masterten A. and P. Association, and will commence his.duties in about threo weeks' time.
MANAWATU
The weather, which has been most unseasonable lately, lias taken a.turn for the better, and Thursday was quite like spring. Mild weather is bndly wanted, as the grass is not coming on in tho manner that was ejected. In fact, it is really no- more forward than it was at the beginning of August. The death of Air. Thomas King at Bulk has removed another "rerv old identity from the Mannwatu and Itangitikei districts, of which he,was one of tho nionper settlers. Horn in Ireland, he came to;the Dominion in 1878, and settling in Palmerslon North, he, in company with a' brother, .established a grocery business, which they currier! on successfully for many years. Relinquishing business, ho later held the positions of secretary Io the Bulls Town Board and afterwards of the liangilikci Dairy Company. Tie-was nn enthusiastic supporter of sport of all kinds, and was for somo time secretary to (he Itangitikei Racing Club. He was one of the oldest members of. the Masonic craft in the Dominion, and assisted in the foundation of both the Mnnawntu and I'migilikei Lodges. For some time Mr. King has been in failing health, but continued his work up to a. short time before hisdenth. He leaves a widow and grown-up family.
DANNEVIRKE Pig-lireodors are living a very good time in this district, up to 9d. per lb. boin? pnid. fnv prime bacon animals. Although tho fishing season lias only just opened, some fair snort lias been re. wirted by anglers, a few nice 'baskets having been brought in. The best of these were obtained by ixicksen 'and Edwards in the' Oringi stream. The Pongaroa County election for. an extraordinary vacancy resulted in some .close polling, the winning candidate. Mr. A. K. r.iirnotl. scoring nq-ainst Mr. J, Lnnt's ,?G and K. W. riemens's 27. Wednesday's football resulted as fol. lows:—Junior championship—Woodvillc and Onnondville nlayed a draw. This makes another match necessary, as they have both scored equal points. The Boys' TTirrh School team won the thirdernde shield. Tn the junior contest, To Kelinnga beat Woodvillo by three to nil.
