THE MEAT TRADE
9 RAPID CLEARANCE OF STOIIES. The Prime Minister made a statement to the House of Representatives yesterday a.s to the position of the meat export business at present, and the progress tlmt has been made in mincing the quantities of mkit in store in recent months. Mr. Massev said that on June 30 of this year there were in the stores 7,934,921 freight carcasses of meat, reducible on aecoun: of allocations already made to 7,551,125. On September 15 the total number of carcasses in the cold stores wns (i.15f>,(>30, reducible lo 5,009,125. "This means," said -Mr. Massey, that during the last two ami a half months there has. been a decrease of 1,885,000 carcasses in the stores. If this information is coupled with the fact that there are twenty ships in sight at present, I think it will be admitted that we are getting rid of our meat in a satisfactory way, ami that the position to-day is very much better than it has 'been for several years past. The Hon. It. Ileaton Rhodes asked for information as to the number of carcasses to be taken in the twenty ships. Mr. Massev: The average is about: 90.000 carcasses per ship, and there are twenty-two ships in sight. Mr. Forbes: What about- this committee of investigation that is supposed to be going Home? Mr. Massev: The proposal is to have a conference of persons interested in the freezing works, proprietary and farmers' companies, and the decision is being awaited by the people concerned before coming to a decision. So far as I can sen tho committee nominated will go Home. Mr. Forbes: The Government is sending them Home? ■ Mr. Massey: "The Government will send Dr. I'eakes with them." Mr. Massev indicated that the terms of the arrangement were not yet concluded.
