GOOD ROADS ASSOCIATION

CONFERENCE OF DELEGATES. A conference of tho Good Roads Association of New Zealand was held yesterday for the purpose of assembling tho views of all institutions who are inter-' estod in the matter of better roads, and of adopting some uniform scheme acceptable to all parties for presentation to Parliament. ' Sir.' M\ H. Wynyard, ol Auckland, presided, and their were present delegates representing the following institutions: New Zealand farmers' Union. Wellington Chamber of Commerce. Now Zealand Counties' Association. New Zealand Municipal Association, Good Roads Association of New Zealand, New Zealand Automobile Union, Wellington Automobile Association, New Zealand Garage Proprintfirs' Association, Aucklnnd Chamber of Commerce, Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, and Wanganni Chamber of Commerce. In opening tho conference the chairman snid that it was common know-' ledco that improvement, of road construction was needed, but the matter hinged on how tlie money for this purpose was to be obtained. The question for conniderntion was the system by which the necessarv reform could bo introduced. The proposals of the Good Roads Association regarding-the financing and administration of the . main roads of the Dominion were based on the principles of the Victorian Country Roads Board Act, with variations to suit local conditions. The speaker intimated that tho Now Zealand Counties' Association was discussing the question, and proposed appointing a committee to deal with the result of thoir deliberations on the roads. The attitude of the association was simply eonfmed to the improvements of the roads generally, ami be recommended that the association's proposals be taken as the basis of disoussiofc. ' This was agreed to, and after some discussion the proposals as read by Mr. Wynyard to the Counties' Conference were atrreed to with some slight' amendments. During Iho discuOTon it was recommended that a committee be appointed to discuss tho proposals with the Counties' Association, and this was agreed uijou. A deputation from the confer,enco is to meet the Counties' Association this morning to confer on the matter. It was decided that the chairman and as many members of the conference as possible wait on the Prime Minister the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Internal' Affairs, to place their proposals before them, and, further, if possible. to also place the proposals before the members of the House.
