ASSAULTING A DETECTIVE

SHIP'S OFFICER FINED. J. Cameron, third officer on the s.s. Cordoba, was charged before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, yesterdar afternoon, with refusing to quit the Carlton Hotel when requested to do 80/ and ho was also charged with assaulting Detective Haniniersley and Peter Crass. ' The accused pleaded guilty to the first charge and not guilty to the other two. Detective Sergeant Hawle prosecuted and tho accused was not represented by counsel. Datestive Hammersley said that ho enme to Wellington with a prisoner, and stayed at the Carltou Hotel. On Wednesday evening he was upstairs in the hotel, and while he was speaking to tho licensee, the accused and another came upstairs. They wero under the influence of liquor. They were, requested bv ''the licensee to leave the hotel. Sho 'made every effort, to got them to leave but they became abusive. Witness told the accusal tlint ho was a police officer nnd a detective and produced his hand-culta. The accused did not believe lie was adetective. Witness said lie had ultimately to knock the man down, and when on tho ground tho accused turned on his owu mate, knocked him, down and pfimmelled him, till ho was pulled away. Tho accuscd, who conducted; his own case, in cross-examining the detective, asked: "Did you uso a Knuckle duster?" "No, I did not." replied the (|eleciive, "but I did produce my 'haml-cuffs, and in the struggle I may have hit you with them." Evidence in sunport was given by Peter Crass, and bv Mrs. Paulsen, licensee of the Carlton Hotel. Cameron was lined ,C 2 for refusing to quit the hotel, nnd J!5 for assaulting the detective. For assaulting Peter Crass, which was a minor affair, ho was convicted nnd discharged. The accused was also ordered to pay 12s. expenses and 7s. Court costs.
