A SAILOR'S ESCAPADE CHARGES OF ASSAULT AND VAGRANCY Mr. E, Page, S.M., dealt '.rith the police cases at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday.; A seaman from tho'liner Tainui, named George Smith, pleaded guilty to a charge of having assaulted Alice Barrett, and not guilty to a charge o';' vagrancy in that he was found by night on the promises of Alice Barrett. Sub-Inspector Emerson said that tho complainant, Mrs. Barrett, went out into the back yard of her premises, at about 51.50 p.m. on to gather some clothes hanging on the line, when she saw the accused standing by a window, llrs. Barrett thought it wss her son, and exclaimed, "Oh, you did frighten me." The accused Teplied, "Don't you scream out." However, Mrs. Bamtt did Bcream, and the accused then caught hold of hor and hit her. Her son-then came out, and the accused also struck him. Mrs. Barrett and h?r eon gave evidence on the above lines. The accused Eaid that he could not explain why he had gone into the yard. He wag drunk at the time, and "I humbly 'beg the Jad/a pardon," he eaid. His Worship fined the accused X 5 on each charge, and ordered him to pay witnesses' expenses, 12s. Time was allowed in which to pay the fine. CHARGE OF TB'EFT. Page, S-M., heard the case in which Woolf Phillips, tailor, of Adelaide Road, claimed from Mrs. Ben Abel, of Sutherland Road, Lyall Bay, tho sum of £1 10®., the balance a'l'leged to be due for making a costume. The costume was mads in December "last from. material supplied by the defendant. Tho cost of making was £i Bs., and the defendant paid.ißlJ Iss. on account. The defendant comp'.ained that the coat did not fit, and lad been cut badly, and counterclaimed for iBl 12s. 9d., the cost of the material supplied; and tho amount paid on account. 'After hearing tho evidonce the Magistrate' said he thought there were some defects, and adjourned;' the case for 21 days in order; that plaintiff might have ail opportunity to remedy the same. Mr. G. ,W. Hellish appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. P. W. Jackson for the defendant.

Riddell, li.M.,delivered reserved judgment regarding a claim, made by Oswald Disicy, dairyman, against Thomas Goodey. labourer, for possession of a Jersey calf,'or its value, £1, together with £5 damages for wrongful detention. The poini; at issue was 'as to the ownership of the calf, which was claimed by both plaintiff and defendant as their own projierty. Plaintiff was nonsuited, and defendant was allowed £? 18a. costs. Riddell, S.M., heard furtiler evidence in respect to the dispute between Helen Mary Stevens, of Otato', and Maggie Stewart Oswald (executrix of the will of the late James Oswald) as to the supply of certain goods at tho time that plaintiff leased a farm to James Oswald. The goods mentioned in the statement of claim were IB 1 tons of hay and .milking appliances, and the total amount of the claim was .£Bl 69. id. Judgment was giver, for ,£2O, with tost? M 15b. Gd.
