WAR HONOURS IN NORTH RUSSIA
V.C. FOR,AN AUSTRALIAN SOLDIER. (Rec. September 30, 5.5 p.m.) London, September 29. The first Victoria Cross in the North Russian campaign has been awarded to a South Australian, Corporal A. P. Sullivan. After fighting a rearguard covering action, his platoon was compelled to cross the "Sheika River by weans of a narrow plunk. Four men .fell into the water. Corporal Sullivan unhesitatingly jumped into' the water four times, despite intens; fire, rescuing al, who otherwise must inevitably havo been drowned. His splendid example and heroism inspired all ranks, who were at •the point'or exhaustion, with the enemy less than a hundred yards distant.
Meritorious' Service Medals have "bc?n awarded the following two Australians:— Sergeant-Major J. P. Baumgan, Second, Artifflery Brigade; Privet« I?. Wood, Second jfachine-flunners. The awards are in recognition of devotion to duty during an epidemic anion? prisoners in carop in Germany.—Ausi.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
