MAYOR NEARLY LYNCHED By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright Omaha, September 29. The mob attempted to lynch the Mayor (Mr. Smith), inflicting serious injuries. Troops have arrived and restored order. During the fire at the courthouse, the prisoners seized a negro, and, in order to save themselves, turned him over to the mob.' Numbers of prisoners escaped. While herded on a roof out of the ivaj of the flames, the mob riddled a .negro with bullets, burned li'.tn, and banged him to a pole. fa tor. The .'Mayor Is recovering from the attempt to lynch him. He interfered with the lynching of a negro. A white onlooker was murdered and many others injured. Federal troops are patrolling the cityThere is no proof that the ntgro who was lynched was guilty of assaulting a girl, as alleged.-Aus.-N.7i. Cable Assn.
CITY UNDER MILITARY CONTROL. (Rec. September 39, 8..10 p.m.) Washington, September 29. At Omaha 800 soldiers are patrolling the streets, and 500 are held in readiness for aii emergency. Everything is quiet. An army baf.loon floats over the city, its observers watching' events. Fires have occurred in the negro districts, The leaders say that tho negroes aro well, armed, and ready to figlit should the mob attack.
