— g rMEN'S SHIELD WON BY AUCKLAND. By Telegraph-Presß Association.Christchurch, September 27. The mafcli lor the Now Zealand Men's Hockey Shield between Canterbury and Auckland was played to-day in glorious weather. Macken, for Auckland, scored in the first half. This -was the only pcoro of tiro match, and Auckland thus won Iho game, taking the shield from the holders (Canterbury). ■ • In the Ladies' Hockey Tournament today, Canterbury (A; beat Auckland by 8 goals to nil;.Mannwntu heat Xeison by 2 to 1; Wellington beat Canterbury (B) by 2 to nil; LOCAL GAMES. Iluia, the winners ot the 1919 junior championship, met a team from Otnkl at, ICarori l'ark on Saturday, and a, fast and interesting game was provided. Both teams showed good form and nweileiit combination. In the earlier stages of the game Otaki obtained a lead, and it was some considerable time'before the local team could equalise. Goals came in (niiok succassion until the score was 3 all. and at this it remained, despite the strenuous efforts of both teams to notch the winning "goal. The lads are to be congratulated on the display of hockey they provided, which was easily as genii as any senior game this season; Mr. Empson was referee. Another good game was provided by Karori and Wesley B. It was generally ; thought that the Wesley team, who were runners up in the championship, would have no difficulty in dispatching thesuburban team; but such was not the ease. If anything, tlw-JKnrori boys had the better of the game. They certainly seem to know more of tlio line points of hockey than their heavier opponents. Weslev B are a heavy team, but fast dribbling and passing is noticeably absent from their play. They depend on hard hitting and weight to carry them 1 through, which tactics they will have to , change if ever the members of this team hope to play successfully in senior grade hockey. The final score, 3 goals to I, in favour of Wesley cannot be taken as a true indication of (ho evenness of the match. Mr. Henderson was referee. ■ University B succeeded in beating Weslev A by 6 goals to !i. The result of this game leaves Wesley A on the bottom of the championship ladder, and the quality of their play throughout the senson cannot be said In warrant them ohtaming any other position. The only oi'icial referee continuing ;• ! game at the Park on Saturday was Mr i Empson. who had control of" the Huh - v.'. Otaki game. The others apparent!*- ) had unt enough interest in the stick game to see the season out.
