WATERSIDERS v. WORKING MEN'S CLUB. The animal draughts match between the above clubs was held in the X shed on Saturday evening, when there was a large gathering of enthusiasts. Mr. J. Armstrong (president) extended a. cordial welcome to the visitors, and announced the pairing. Two games ivero -then contested at each of the ' twenty boards. At the adjournment for refreshments the waterfiders had a lead of ten games, and they were finally returned winners by 27 .pames to 13. They thus retain the local challenge shield for another term. The losers held their own a.t the higher boards, but were \ outclassed by their mori> seasoned opponents at the lower boards. Both games between the captains, Messrs. Connor and Burgess, wero drawn, as was the enso when they> met at byird 1 a year ago. At the conclusion of -the match Mr. F, K. Kelling returned. thanks to tho watersiders for kind hospitality, and also for allowing the visitors bo have tho services of all those who belong to both olubs. They had also generously allowed Mr. Barnes (of ohess fame) to be-re-placed by Mr. J. Mulvey, a.formerrun-ner-up for the New i'eal[)nd',ehampionehip. He took it that generous sportsmanship of this- kind clearly that tho watersiders placed tho interests of draughts before their own prospects of holding the shield. (Applause). Thirty-nine players took part in fcTie annual handicap tourney of the Watersiders' Draughts Club, in which each competitor played four games withevery other competitor. Thi» tourney thus consisted of 2972 games,' whidh were all played off. this being a record of which the members nre justly proud. Tho seven prizes were won as follow:— Pts. scored . H'p. He complimented the Watersiders on the splendid work that they have been doing for many years past for the advancement of draughts in this' city. CHESS. Several more game.' in tho Welliimton Chess CluVs match Bowlers v. NonBowlers were got oif Ir.'t week. Tho score is now—Non-Bo'-vlers 11. wins, Bowlers 10 wins. There are still seventeen games outstanding, and it is hoped Uhat these will all bn accounted for in the ensuing fortnight. A very close finish is anticipated.
