AVONDALE SPRING RACES
DEAD HEAT FOE TEE CUP. By Telegraph.—.Special Correspondent, Auckland, September 27.. The AvoudaT.e Spring Meeting opened in fine weather, the going was excellent, and there was a record attendance. The totnlisator handled ,£46,191, against £86,4111 10s. on the first day of last year. A field of 20 faced the starter in the Maiden I'late, Tinokaha and No Mistake wore almost equai invuuriies, Mit i\orti) Lobnrn, Heather Sprig, mid BithoJin were also well backed. \Vhen the barrier went up Emerald Hid shot away from the field and led for nio'ro than half the distance; he then 'began to fade away, and coming into the straight Tinokulur had secured a place in the first division, and coming on won decisively by several lengths. No Mistake and Eornialin were close together in the second owl jthmt positions, Emerald Hill having to be convent with fourth place. Benzine and Signature carried most of the money in the Gi-oy Lynn 'Jlurd.cs. When the field settled down it became evident that Benzine was not biking kindly to his task, nnd after ono nv two faulty juniixs he came down. Signature and Tenacious then singled themselves out, but after about a mile and a quarter had been traversed, Tenacious fell. Te Onga then challenged Signature, and raced alongside of him for about'half a mile, but Signature: had a lot in hand, and shook off his, opponent as they came up the straight, and won easily. Marconi was coming fast in third position, Kin Kora was fourth and Sir Agnes last. Twelve two-year-olds competed in the Avoudalo Stakes. It was a good betting race, the Porirua colt Bestir and Caricature carrying the most money. The starter got the field away well, and the winner was weDi concealed when heads wore turned i'oy home. Inside the distance landslide, Ueuiy 'U'nik-, oaturo sorted themselves out and finished in. that order, a head separating first and second; the third horse was a neck away, and IMiss Muriel was fourth. Bestir got a bad start. Undo Ned was the only withdrawal I from the Cup, and there were sixteen- | starters. Gold Rip was favourite, Depredation, Killard, and MeltchtkofT also being well backed. In one of the greatest races ever witnessed on tlio. Avondale course, King Lupin, who drew the inside position, was. tiio first to show out, followed by Sweet Corn and Meltchikolf, Mulliugar leading tho next division. With half a mJ.e gone Meltchikoff went, to tno front; a little further on King Lupin again anoved up, and was in the van as the field swept into the straight. Alteration could now bo seen coming through at a great pace, with Blue Cross in c'lose company. King Lupin was outpaced, and Meltchikoff coukl not maintain his position, though ho ran on gamely. Alteration and Blue Cross Kissed tho judge's box locked ■ together, it dead heat being declared, with (.tc«l Kip in third place, Meltchikoff fourth, anil D.epredation, wiio ran a fino race, liltn. Tho Steeplechase resulted in a close finish between Signature and Jacaranda, Kmnalpi and IConui being tho only others to complete tho journey. A uiilo from home Signature and Jacaranda loft the rest of the field. Signature appeared to be holding his opponent safely, but made a bad jump at the last hurdle, and just managed to beat Jacaranda on the post by a head.'
Escaped was the pub'ln. fancy in tho Hendei-son Handicap, llekanui led for the. greater part of tho journey, but Tabasco came at him on the turn for home, and won decisively by a neck, a length separated Hokanui from llyllus, who was going very fast at the finish. Puddington Green was fourth. The Hack Woltor was fought out by a field of 22. lioiiwnl SteiniM being |li-i best backed, . RatliHn won from start to finish. Slowcoach ran second all tho way, New Zealand was a good third, and Persian Prince fourth.
Mill-o'-GV.vrio and Canzonet were the public selections for the Flying Slakes. Stilts led for the greater part of the distance, but Bedford eamo nt him in the straight, and won by about a length and a half from Canzonet. Miil-o'-Gowrio got a bad start, THE RESULTS. 8j Tclccraph-PiT'W Aosocintion.
