PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA

The Sunday evening concerts of tho Professional Orchestra are always popular with the music-lovers of Wellington, so that last night's performance was no exception in being given to a very large and appreciative audience. What extra enthusiasm patrons evinced on tins occasion was'duo'to the presence ot Mr. Alfred Hill (assistant-conductor of the New South Wales Conservntoritim Orchestra), under whose inspiring baton the overture was rendered. The orchestra has never been heard to greater advantage than in its interpretation of ■'l'liigals Cave (Mendelssohn). At the conclusion of the number thunderous applause burst forth, and Mr. Hill was personally given an ovation of which any artist might have been proud. He had only a few woros to snv to tho house, and m them he expressed ins pleasure at being .before his fellow-townsmen again, and his" hope that it might lie possible for tiio Verbnigghen (irchestr,. 10 come to New Zealand. Mr. 11. Mosehini wielded the baton for, the rest of the evening, the orchestra rendering the following items: "Scenes Alsaciennes" (Massenet); "La Tosca" Fantasia (Puccini); "Sizilietta" (Blon); and "Danse Macabre" vSaint-Saens). Tho whole programme was immensely enjoyable.
