General Si.r Andrew Russell and Lady Russell i-reived at Rotorua on Saturday evening, and -were enthusiastically received by the returned soldiers, who, preceded bv the band, dragged the carriage- to the Gra,ud Hotel, and heartily cheered the visitors, The .resident officer (Mr. Hill) officially welcomed General Russell, who expressed his Hugh .appreciation of the benefit' to the soldiers, from their treatment at Rotorua, and tlia kindness of the people of the town towards them.—Press Assn.

Mr. Alfred Hill, R.C.M.. is at present a visitor to Wellington., He was present at the Wellington Professional Orchestra's concert last evening, and conducted tho opening i(em. Mr. Hill received a hearty welcome. •'

Mr. John D. Scott, recently manager for- Ross and Glpwlining nt_ Napier, and who has been appointed a London buyer for tho firm, left by the Riverina accompanied by his wife, to join the Imlarra. sailing from Sydney for London. Before leaving Napier and Wellington, Mr. and Sirs. Scott were farewelled by n numerous! host of friends.

Mr. David Watson, a well-known resident of Palmerston North, died on Saturday, aged G2 years, telegraphs our Palmerston correspondent. '1 ho late Mr. Watson was born in Wellington, and spent a number of years in Australia, subsequently returning to lilie Dominion, where for some years he carried on a bakery business in the Levin and Rangitou districts. He leaves a widow, two sons, and-five daughters, all wellknown in llio Palmerston district.

There was an excellent attendance at the. Khamlallah School on Saturday night to welcome the new headmaster (Mr. .John Bringans). Mr. J. M. Dale, chairman of the School Committee, presided, and, in introducing Mr. Bringans, referred 'to tho regret they all had felt at the loss of the lato master (Mr. Jenkins). He read a letter he had received from Mrs. Jenkins expressing Iher gratitude to the people of the district for the handsome gift they liad presented her with. The speaker assured the new headmaster of the active co-operation of tne parents in his work. Mr. 11, A. Wright, M.P., also spoke. Mr. Bringans, in a happy reply, thanked the committee for giving- him the opportunity of meeting the parents. Ho said a pood understanding between school and the homes was a necessity. Ho always found it a 1 great assistance to know.the parents of the scholars. During the evening musical items were rendered by the members of the Khandallah Musical Society.
