AUCTION SALES
4 (To the Editor.) Sir—l notice in Saturday's Dominion a remit by Auckland to tho Farmers' Union now sitting in Wellington, that auctioneers be compelled by law to state tho name of vendors of stock put up for action. I think it of much more importance that the auctioneers would also be compelled in all cases to state the nanio ot;,tho buyer of such stock, and in the event of no sale to state tho name of tho last bidder, who should havo the right to claim the lot nt tho vendors reserve. If this reform were adopted it would altogether abolish tho pernicious practice of bogus bidding or what is known as trotting, which has often such a depressing and mischievous influence on auction sales. As the breeding and disposal of live stock is such an esseutinl part of a farmer's business it is somewhat surprising that this question has not boon taken up and fully considered bv every farmers' union in the country, 'it is also surprising that auctioneers in their own interests do not join in getting this reform brought about, as it would greatly popularise and increase such an important business, which is now in ninny cases regarded with suspicion and distrust. But. if thero is anyono that can have anythihg to say in' defence of the system as it is now carried on, I may havo something more to say in reply.—l am, etc., FARMER.
