RUGBY RULES
ENGLISH UNION CRITICISED. (By Telegraph—Presi Association.) Christchurch, September 25. At a farewell gathering to-night, on the evo of his departure for Timaru as inspector of schools, Mi*. F. T. Evans, pre-uiont of the Canterbury Rugby Union, i.nd president of the New Zealand Rugby Union, in acknowledging several handsome presents from footballers, criticised Hie English Rugby Union for its conservatism in refusing to allow amendments to the rules of the game. It was lather heart-breaking for him, he said, lo read in various English papers that tho Canterbury Busby Union and o'Micr parts of New Zealand were playing a professional game. Certainly the musty old gentlemen on the English Rugby Union should have learned some, of the lessons of tho war, and cultivato a closer connection between Britain and the Dominions in Rugby football. They had, however, turned down requests from the various Dominions for necessary alterations to the game. If New Zealand could secure a confederation of other Rugby Union countries, ho would favour cutting the painter with tho English union, but ho did not favour isolation.
