FLIGHT TO THE SOUTH POLE
COPE EXPEDITION'S PLANS. (Rec. September 25, 11.45 p.m.) London, September 21 Preoarations for the Cope flight to the South Pole are well advanced. Exports are designing the 'plane. Negotiations are proceedings with one of the foremost airmen in the world to take the place of General Lee (deceased), as chief of the aeronautical staff. Commander. Copo also intends to use the aeroplane in order to man out the. Antarctic from the air dining u six year's expedition on the ice. Sbackleton has agreed that it would be practicable to use an aeroplane which would have great climbing capacity, and carrv four men and provisions for at least a month. The experts are convinc ed that thev will be able lo design a 'nlnnc which will climb tsn thousand feet, and have mountain ski-is instead of wheels, to enable it to land on ieo or snow. The airmail would also act as pilot for the ship in the pnssago through the ice, pointing out the free channels. Lieutenant Ernest Joyce will bo second in command.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
