H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND

LETTER OF THANKS FROM THE COMMANDER. Before H.M.S. .New Zealand left Wellington the New Zealand Club 'presented to the ship the Maori slogan, in silver letters, "Ake, ake, ake, kia, kalta," to "be placcd,on the wheel. Captain Leggett, in acknowledging the gift, wrote to the president of the club the following letter :—

"On Vdialf of the officers and men of H.M.S. New Zealand I. write to thank you and the committee and members of the New Zealand Club for your gift of a Maori slogan to bo plnced on the ship's wheel. I would also thank you for the, kind; expressions contained in your letter. Few of us now in H.M.S.' New Zealand have previously t;isited the land which, despite this, we shall in future regard as our second home. We have all felt proud to serve in the ship, and our present visit has made us the prouder in that we have been enabled to realise the spirit which prompted her presentation to the Mother Country. We are struck, in the light of the ships history, .by the appropriateness of the motto when it was presented in 1913, and we feel that, should occasion arise, thost) serving in the Dominion's own ship will again he inspired by those ancient and magnificent and ever, and ever, lie strong.'"
