LOANS FOR EDUCATION. The Educational Purposes Loans Bill, introduced in the llouso yesterday, proposes to give effect to tlie proposals, ot the Government ns outlined in the Budget for providing additional funds for educational needs. The cffect of the Bill is to Rive the Government power to borrow a sum 0f.,£500,000 in the current "financial year, and the sum. of. <£750,000 in each of the succeeding four financial yt'avs. *

MONEY FOR THE UNIVERSITY. The New Zealand University Amendment Bill, which 'Was circulated yesterday, makes provision for more funda being furnished by the Government for New Zealand University and for tha four alllliated colleges. The proposals are that, the New Zealand University (tho examining body) shall have a grant of , .MCflO instead of .0)00 a year. Auckland, Victoria, Canterbury, and Otago University Colleges ' are, to have additional grants from tlie Government of J555110 a year, and in addition the Otago . College is to have ,£2500 for the Medical SMiool. The Minis tor is also to lie em< uowered to give to encli of tho four colitises the sum of .£SOO for workers' ex- • tension, lectures, including tutorial Masses, in university subjects.

THE PUBLIC TRUST. , The' Public Trust Office Amendment Kill, read a first time yesterday in the House, is intended to make possible the establishment of .branch offices of the Department in any centres of the Dominion where the, amount of business may warrant the expenditure.

TEMPORARY POLICE. The Police 'Force Amendment Bill makes provision for the appointment of t«mpprary officers of the Force as sergeants or constables' to "assist in the preservation of peace and order, the prevention of crime, and the apprehension of offenders. Persons so appointed ♦lhall 'hold office at, the will of the Cornmissionet 1 , and are at liberty to resign .011 one month's notice in writing. These temporary appointees are not to be entitled ,to superannuation benefits. Persons' at present in the Force as temporary members of it are to be deemed to be legally' appointed. . Permanent officers of the Foreo arc to be deemed to be three-monthly servants of the Crown.
