THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Glencoe.)

The Spring Meeting of tho Wanganui Jockey Club will take place to-day. The fields aro good and the racing should bo productive of excellent contests. Class is well represented in the Flyin Handicap, and the majority of the best three-year-olds in the Dominion ale engaged in the Wanganui Guineas. , Racing will commence with the Flying Handicap, in which "here is a highclass field engaged. Tho runners include several horses that are fit lo take their place in tho Stewards' Handicap. The result of the race appears to be difficult to anticipate. That good horse Volo is at tho top of the handicap with 9st. 91b., and with 151J>. less on his back comes that aoiart performer Domos. Maiolia is also in the' iield, as is Solfanello, but the two last-named may be better for a race. On tho other hand, Kipling has raced several times this season, and has been prominent in each of his starts, so that it looks certain lie will take a prominent part in the decision of the race to-day. However, on Marton running, whatever he is so should Volo be, and when the machine closes the top-weight may be carrying the most support. There is a field of 13 in tho Maiden Race, but only two of them, in Tame Fox and Nursing Sister, have form to recommend them. The :'ormer does not begin too well, but lie i? a good finisher, while Nursing Sist;r is very quick to find her feet, but is not a slroni? finisher. On (he other hand, the Solferino filly will be well served .by the circular Course, and with L. Morris, k the saddle it will came at no surprise if she defeats Tame Fox.

The Wanganui Guinc.l9 i« the next race, and there will most likel.y bo six runners. Warplanc and Affectation may 1» the favourites, but ilie raco is not likely to be confined to this pair, for 'Hetaua, Motuihi, Bose Queen, and Crenides are a quartet 'that can take their place in any weight-forego race in the country, 60 there is every reason to expect that tho contest for this year's Guineas will be one of tho best cvor neon on the Wanganui course. The hurdlers lo be scon out are not a good lot, which is proved by the fact that Movement is top-ivjight with list. 71b. In spite of the bis weight the Taranaki mare looks like being well in the running, and the strongest opposition may come from Combustion, who is in at the minimum. In the Hack Steeplechase Mattock is rather a better class than the others, thought good reports are to hand concerning Tigerland. The last-named is a fair jumper, and with no weight on his back ho can bo defended upon to go at a good pace for two and a hall miles. Tho Spring Handicap sees Nobleman in the position of top-freight. He has not had a race this sewn, but generally races well when fresh, and he anil All Over may account for the rest of tho field, Tlie form of tho latter &l Biccarton was particularly pood. For the mile Fori? Buce Sir hanciful and Seasnrite will 159 well support' but Probily is reported to be a greatlv improved mare, and as she stays on well in her races the top-weight mav find it difficult to shako lwr off at tho finish. ' . , For the concluding event notlnnir roads better than Farce, a winner flt Mwlon, and who will be well nerved with her light weight. FINAL GALLOPS AT WANGAMUI.
