INSURANCE (9) V. LAW (C). Bad weather entirely spoiled the football match played at the Athletic Park yesterday afternoon between teams representing the law clerks and insurance clerks of the city. Heavy rain Jell throughout'the greater part of the game, ami the ground was like a quagmire. Within a lew minutes of the start of the game, Insurance bore down ou the Law, and Akere scored an easy' try. llcley raiied to convert. Law (jiea'ks thentooK a lumd .'it attacking, and Hutchison succeeded in equalising tho score with a try, which Scott did not convert. Play remained in the Insurance twenty-five tor some time, until'the forwards worked clear, and Law territory was penetrated. Scoit stopped the offensive movement, and Insurance once more found themselves on the defensive. I J lay shifted towards half-way, where Poole got possession, 'and put in a rather gootLdodgy run-'into tho Law territory, where some long arms soon brought him down. Law returned to the attack, and were within striking distance of their objective when Cristopherson saved with a good kick to the.lino. Following tho throw-in, Insurance were penalised, and Thomas kicked apenalty goal. Law, 6; Insurance, 3. Near half-way Scott picked up from the ruck, kicked, and followed up. He was not ciuick enough to get the ball before Man-is, however, a.n.l the latter saved. The .creasy state of the ball made attempts at picking up well nigh impassible, and the game resolved itself into a-forward struggle. Law tamo close to scoring again, b\it N. Pool did some nice dribbling'; which resulted in tho danger zone being shifted from in front of the Insurance goal. Shortly before halftime; Christopherson broke away, and almost got clear. His work might have resulted in Insurance scoring had' he been better supported. In the second spell there was some hard play in front of the Law goal. Insurance obtained temporary relief, but near the corner Heley picked up from the loose, and got over. Gfierson's kick .missed.. Law, C; Insurance, t>. Christoolierson had a shot at potting a goal, but the ball went wide. Insurance were having all the best of the play now, and thev had ham hfck in not scoring on two or three occasions. A formidable rush was stopped by Scott, and a few minutes latei- Law 'worked their way to the Insurance twenty-Svo by .Judicious line-out play. Insurance came' back to the Law.end, however, and Akers touched down. Grierson again had no luck with the kick. Insurance, 9; Law, G. The game closed without there being any further score. Mr. H. Roberts was referee.
A smoke concert was held in the evening. Mr. F. B. Anyou. was in the chair, ami the toasts honoured included "The King," "The "Victors," and "The Diggers." During the evening several musical items were rendered.
