THE PAY OF TEMPORARY CLERKS
Sir,—ln a recent issue you publish Mr. Massey's reply to Dr. Newman on the question of temporary clerks and tho bonus. Will you kindly permit me to point out how misleading that reply is? Taking the case of married men, I know of one department where they were receiving £3 10s. per week nearly a year ago, and the only increase was 10s. from July last. Ignoring Mr. Massey's "rapid increments," .the "increase is a loss of Is. Gd—the bonus working out at 11s. Gd. per week. Assuming that in the ordinary course of eventa there should have been an automatio rise of ss. after the first three months service (I will say nothing of a subsequent one), this leaves the men with an actual loss of Gs. 6d. per weekRegarding the permanent hands Who get less pay than tho temporary ones, was Mr. Maesey referring to some of the cadets? , As for the Railway Department clerks, good luck to- them—only it sets one Hlinking - 1 am ' el °- BULL'S EYE.
