President Wilson admits that the American claim to the islaud is duo to a strong report by naval experts, who insist on the necessity for American, bases in the Western Pacific. This may bo inspired primarily by tho American interest in the Philippines, but America's decision to straddle tho" Pacific will obviously have an important bearing on Australasian defsnee.—Aus.-N.Z.
