MOTOR-CAR OVERTURNS
DISTRESSING FATALITY IN THE WAIIiAKAPA. (From Our Special Correspondent! . A distressing niotor-car fatality in tho Wnii'iU'apa involving the,death of a Masterton business man occurred yesterday afternoon, it appears that about 3.30 o'clock in the afternoon Mr William J. Biggs, motor-car upholsterer, of Masterton, accompanied by his ivil'e and fiv6 children, was motoring in tho Taratalu district, when opposite ' Grey's Bush the cur skidded on ..some loose metal through the tire burstiug and overturned. All the family were pinned beneath the car with the exception of the t\ys. youngest children, wlio were thrown out. Mr, Biggs was killed instantaneously, his neck being broken. Mrs. Biggs suffered internal iniuries, and her daughter Ellen had her collarbone fractured. The rest of tho children are suffering from shock. Mr. W. 11. Tylee, of Maslerton, who was driving in a car some distluico ahead, heard the.crash and immediately hastened to the scene of the accident. i With the. aid of two jacks he and his son managed to extricate Mrs. Biggs, and the body of Mr. Bigjjs, but it was not until Constable Phillips arrived frc-m Masterton th.it the car could be righted and the occupants released. The eldest boy, aged 17 years, had made his escape by smashing open one of the rear doors. The injured were attended to by Dr. Helen Cowie, who was on the scene within halt-an-hour of the accident. A DRIVER DROWNED. 3< Tcicgrtuii— Gore, September 20. Wi'luam Cody, aged about .40 and unmarried, was drowned yesterday in the Waikaia River. 110 was driving a toa.m of two lioises through tho river in a fresh. Both horses were drowned. The dray and horse 9 were recovered this morning, but no signs were found of tho man's body. The deceased had ken employed at "Glengarry Station for seven years. TIMBER WORKER INJURED. Whakatanc, September 20. While dragging: timber from tho bush at Waimana on Tuesday, MHingo Douglas had several ribs broken through a load overturning on rough ground. His brother, who is a member of tho Whakatflhe Harbour Board, was present and convoyed him to his house,' where ho is progressing well.
