PUBLIC SCHOOL SYLLABUS
NEW REGULATIONS.
In tho "Gazetto" issued last evening regulations for' tho organisation, examination and inspection of public schools and the eylhibuu of instruction arc published. Tho pupils of overy public school aro to bo divided into four divisions-pre-paratory division, junior division, middlo division, and senior division. Tho preparatory division is to consist of children ■who havo been under instruction for less than two years; junior division for two years and not more than four years; middle division for four years and not more than six years; senior division for six years or more. Tho tunc spent nn tho senior division will for the average boy or girl bo two yeaw. . \ , 'a.ho cui.ssi hen lion of a school is to bo made at the discretion of tho head teacher, who may arrange- his pupils m different olasses for different subjects according to ability and proficiency. Pupils shall for all purposes of record, but not necessarily of teaching, bo classified ■According to their capacity and attainment in. English. Tho teacher must hold periodical ex•iminations of tho olasses and. nn annual examination which must be held in November or December, and tho regulations prescribe the maximum number of marks to bo gained by the pupils in tho several subjects. ~-.,, Tho subjects of instruction in tho various classes will bo grouped under tho general headings ofEm'lish—which will inclndo ornl exliression 'and written expression; tho former covering speech-training, reading, recitation, and singing, and tho latter writing, spelling, composition, and gram'""Graphic" expression-including drawing and handwork: Arithmetic: . , ~ Man and nature-including naturestudy, geography, elementary science, and home science: .... ~ Man and society-including history, civics, and moral instruction: .
