The employment of girls as telegraph messengers is said to l>e quite a success. Between 20 and 30 girls aro now employed. Unlike other positions in tho Post Office, which owing to war exigoncios havo been temporarily filled by women to be abolished when tho men return, the girl.messengers' branch is regarded a,s a permanent innovation, not to bo dispensed- with when more boys aro offering. They have a separate department from the boys, and aro under tho control'of a matron. Contrary, to expectations, the closing of tho war lli-as not caused a larger number- of boys to offer their services. In order to make tho servico more attraotivo l a tho right typo *rf lad tho Department a short timo 'ago increased the salary to 255. a woek, but even this additional inducement has not been sufficient to fill tho vacancies.
