Exception was taken at the annual meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club to the. proposal that all jockeys and trainers be licensed by the Racing Conference. It was considered that metropolitan centres were quite as capable, it not more so, of doing lihis work. They also had a belter opportunity of knowing the characters of local' men requiring licenses. Tho proposal had been made try Sir George Clifford, who threatened to retire from racing if it were not carried. Mr. Beatson, who introduced the subject, said ho would ho very sorry l:o pee Sir George Clifford retire, hut lie thought it was an incorrect move to make a throat. Under such a system men doing work on a farm and occasionally a little training would not have a hope of getting a license.. Mr. Brown (the. president) thought the mover must have something in his mind to prompt him to make eucb. a proposal. Ho had the interests of racing at heart and would not threaten to retire ' without some good reason. A resolution was tended to the effect that the meeting was of the opinion that 'the_ metropolitan olubs were competent to license jockeys and trainers, and was not in favour of Sir George Clifford's proposal. Delegates to the conference will be instructed accordingly.
