THE HATAITAI SCHOOL
SEPARATE IDENTITY REFUSED.
The school at Hataitai ..is a aida school to the Roseneafch School and is under tho snmo headmaster. Now that Hataitai is a more generously populated suburb than Roseneath,' the. residents want a free and independent 'sohool of their on, .and ther Education Board, which thinks likewise, backed its claim made for ii "full school" to tho Departmoiir. The Department replied as follows:— , ; ; "With further reference to the above subject, and your memo, of ith nit., I have to' say that in view of tho iacta that there is ample accommodation for tho pupils of tho upper standards at the main sohool at Hoseneuth and also, that largo additions turo at present being made to the Kilbirnie School, it does not appear that the question of establishing a separate school at Hataitai is very urgent. : It must also tie considered that if an independent school is established 'additions will be needed immediately at Hataitai- to provido for the pupils of tho upper standards. Under the circumstances, therefore,' tho Department is of opinion that the proposal to establish a separate school might very well uo postponed for the present.—A-. Bell, secretary." .. The chairman (Mr. T. Forsyth) said that the board had advocated the. change strongly. It was (ill right at one timt, for Hataitai to bo a side school to Roseneath, 'but Hataitai was now a very bi" plnco and was growing all the time. A.s tho result of tho present position there were children coming into tho Clydo Quay School from Hataitai. _ Tho secretary: Thore are twenty-nine. Continuing, Air. Forsyth said that this was tho sort of thing that was leading to disgraceful overcrowding at Clyde Quay—it did not give them a dhance. Tho addition to the Kilbirnie School was an infant department which had been wanted for years and had nothing to do with tho caso. To suggest that it nffocted tho upper standards at Hataitai was ridiculous. Unless they took action now tho matter would bo shelved for another twclvomonth. Tho board decided to enter ft strong protest to tho Minister of Education against tho Departmental attitude oyer tho application on behalf of Hataitai.
