FORGERY OF CHEQUES

ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY.

In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. W. G. Biddell, S.M., John Thomas Coririn was charged:-(l) With iorginj; the namo of Joseph Lewis to ft cheque drawn on the Bank of Australasia for M 155., payable to John Clemoe, rtiul uttering the same to Wolf, Black and Co.; (2) with forging the namo of. Harold Brown to a, cheque drawn on tho Bank of Australasia' for M 55., payable to John Clemoe, and uttering eauio to Beniamin Goldberg. . The accused pleaded guilty to both chni'L'es. It was shown by the evidence that the accused.had been employed by the Vacuum Cleaning Company, and while enuased in- cleaning the promises of Dalßety and Co., Ltd., early last month he abstracted four blank cheques from the private cheque book of Mr. "W. S. Bennett, manager of Dalgety and Co. Tim accused filled in two cheques for the amounts stated, and on August 11 went to the shoo of W. Black and Co., drapers, Manners Street, purchased certain iroods. and tendered one of tho "cheques in payment. This, after some questions put to the accused, was accepted by the firm, and linked in the usual way. Ihe cheque was returned marked "No account." On the same date, accompanied bv a woman, the accused presented the other cheque at the establishment of Sie-cls. ■ costume manufacturer, Manners Street in payment for a costume which tho woman had previously eelectcd, and on which she had paid a deposit of ss. This cheque was al6O returned marked "No account." Tho accused, when arrested, made a statement admitting his guilt, and confirmed this' in Court yesterday. Ho wns committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
