FIRE IN THE CITY
DAMAGE TO THKEB PHOPERTLES. At 1.20 a.m. yesterday the fire brigade received a call to an, outbreak of tiro in tho kitchen of tho San.trance restaurant, noar the Grand. Opera Houso, in Manuel's Street. ■ When the brigade reached the spot tho toiok premises or tho restaurant were well alight, and the front room—the restaurnnt proper—was filled with smoke. The kitchen was completely gutted, and tho flio burnt through tho walls near the ceiling on both bands into the Blue Bird confectionery shop aiid Lovy's second-hand nlothes shop on the other side. In both places the goods wore damaged by smoke,'and, in tho case, •of tho Blue' Bird premises the stock is said to havo suffered a littlq from tho combined offers of smoiej heat, and water. Though tho premises wero old, and the flames had a gocd grip, tho brigade got the fire under in a quarter of an hour.
Tho keener of the restaurant. Mr. Fitzgerald Clark, who, with his wire and son, resides on the premises, stated that all was apparently well in the kitchen whou ho retired for tho night. About- 1.15 a,m. he was awakened by the loud and excited, barking of his. dog, and opening tho bedroom door to investigate tho cause of the disturbance, found the place full' of smoke. He went back to get his wifo and son out of tho place, and in making his exit, Mr. Clark burnt his hand slightly and Mrs. Clark also suf- ' feral slight injuries. l
As the adjoining premises (the "Blue Bird"} wero threatened, and it was known that the proprietor and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Ginsberg (and infant) wore sleeping on the premises, the brigade made it their business to alarm them. Thev were aroused with uome littlo difficulty— their'room by this time being well filled with smoke, and were helped down the ladder in a stato of collapse. Mr. Clark had his furniture insured in, the New Zealand office for .£GOO, and Mr. Giusberg's stock and furnishings were covered for .£7OO in tho samo ofllco. The building, a property in the Martin Kennedy estate, was insured in the Northern offico for .£SOO. Only slight daruago from smoke resulted in Levy's 6hop.
