AN EXPLOSION IN THE EARLYMORNING. Christchurch, September IG. The Tainui went aslioro :about four miles north of Gore Bay, the spot bern* marked by clouds of black smoke. Tho fire is still raging, although tho ship looks a mere skeleton of iron.
The'only survivor was the cook, William H. Farrand. He states that an explosion occurred at 3 a.m.. which blew out. part of the front hatch. Immediately , afterwards an .attempt was made to launch tho ship's lifeboat, but it was swamped and capsized immediately it reached tho water. All the members of tho crew were thrown into tho water and wit]| the exception of the cook wero drowned. Farrand was saved by hanging on to tho lifeboat until he was washed up on the beach about four miles from the scene of the explosion. He wo.s' much exhausted when he reached the beach. Farrand adds that after the boat capsized some of the men clung to it, but they gradually dropped off. Captain Cowan was. almost into the breakers before ho became exhausted and let go. Thren bodies have been washed ashore north of Gore Bay and two in Gore Bay. The 1-odies will liave to bo brought over very broken country. -
