PETONE BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MEETING OV COUNCIL. A meeting of tho Petono Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Tho Mayor (Mr. J. \V. M'Ewan), Councillors Brocklebank, Churchhouso, Hay, Anderson. Bcdingfield, Cook, Kyle, Tovey, and Cox. •• Tho health inspector reported two cases of diphtheria, one of ncarlet fever, and one of bronchial pneumonia. It was decided to accept the invitation of the Early Settlers' Association for the Mayor and councillors to attend tho annual reunion of tho association on Monday next. Tho Superintendent, State Advances Office, wrote advising that authority had been given for the council to borrow ,£12,009. Tho Prime Minister wrote in reply to a letter from tha council stating that tho whole question of coal supplies was receiving the earnest consideration of tho Government. It was hoped to go fullv into the matter during tho session. Mr. Wilford also wrote supporting I the nationalisation of coal mines.
The Palmorston North Borough Council wrote asking tho support of tho council to a resolution recommending that Government grants to returned soldiers for tho purchaso of homes shall only be given on condition that the money is used in the establishment of new homos, and not for tho acquisition of dwellings already in existence.—Received. An application to establish a furriers and tanner's business in William Street was refused, the Health officer having slated that tho site selected was an unsuitable ono for tho establishment of such a business, Tho Lower Hutt Borough Council wroto requesting a reply to its recent letter in the gas dispute, before September 22. It was decided to forward a letter on the matter, which had been written by the Town Clerk.
