TARAKOHE CEMENT WORKS CLOSED
OWING TO TROUBLE AYITH THE AVORKMEN. By TeleitraDii.-Vreeii Allocation. Nelson, September 15. Trouble occurred at the Tarakoho Cement AVorks last Thursday, resulting in tho works being closed down. _ The loading and unloading of vessels bringing coal and other supplies, and taking away cement, has in the past been carried out by the works staff as part of their regular work. The- men now demand' waterside rates of pay for this work, which tho manager declined to' concede. Atmidnight on Thursday the men ceased discharging coal from the Reguhis, refusing to proceed at overtime rates, and labour was not forthcoming later to load cement on tho Kennedy. Tho manager thereupon closed down tho works.
