NATIONALISATION OF MINES
SPECIAL CONGRESS TO BE CONVENED
COMPULSORY MEASURES TO BE ADOPTED By Telegraph—Presß Association-Copyright London, September 10. The motion proposed by Mr. H, Smillic ami pissed by the Trade Union Congress at Glasgow imposes pledges on th» Parliamentary Committee to convene a special congress to decido what action is to be taken to compel tlm Government in en'se it refuses nationalisation. Mr. Smillic said:' "Thoro is -nothing of a syndicalist character in the miners' claims at the present time; but tho limp may come when the industries will advance a further step. Ido not doubt that. if. the miners were advised to do so, they would stop every mine in the country until • tho mines wero nationalised; but this would mean the stoppage of all industries dependent upon coal, and wo, do not want, to do it."
Mr. J! 11. Thomas (Kailwaymen's Union), who seconded the motion, admitted that State ownars'hip of railways during the w y ar had created a had impression upon the public, owing to tho 50"per-cent, increase in fares, the inconvenience to the public, and the mismanagement. But that was not what State ownership should be. Ho believed the Government would refuse nationalisation; but the State ownership of mines is interdependent with the prosperity of the country. MivHavelock Wilson (secretary of tho Seamen's Union) opposed the resolution. Slalo officials, ho esud, were not tho proper people to manage an industry. Tho congress wilt take a straight vote .on Friday on.tho subject of direct action... —Aus.-N'.Z. Cable Assn. DEPUTATION T'o MR, LLOYD ■ ; - GEORGE. London, September 11.
