The five-masted Bclioonor Laurel Whalen, which had been laid up in Auckland for oyer six months for repairs to the auxiliary machinery, arrived at Papeete from this port on August 25 in distress, having sustained considerable damage to her sails. -Eer cylinders wero broken and tlio oil fuel was short, while tho captain 1 was laid up with a. broken aukle. As the result of a survey it was decided that the vessel required new pumps and new cylinders from New Zealand, and new canvas, wliioh will involve two months' delay,

When nearing the New Zealana coast the intercolonial steamer Manuka mei with very rough weather, which necessl' tated reduced speed, and this was responsible for her late arrival.
