Tho weather. from New York was lino until tho vessel reached about 30 degrceß south. From there sho experienced stioug westerly winds au4 high seas, which delayed her considerably. Alter an absence of six months, tho Port Melbourne returned to Auckland this -week. Bhc comes from London, via Capo Town and v Australia, with general cargo. London was left on June 3, and 1300 Australian troops embarked at Dovouport, which port was left to tho accompaniment of a farewell from tho Seventh Battlo Squadion on Juno 7. Fair -weather was experienced in tho run to Cape Town, which was reached on June 25. Then the transport came on to Adelaide and Melbourne; at wl'j.ch ports tho troops wcro discharged. Sho : then called, at Syduey, and loaded coal later at Newcastle, leaving that port for Auckland. Tho Port Melbourne has 300 tons of cargo to dischargo hero, in addition to about 500 tons of coal. Then she proceeds to Tokomaru flay and Wellington to complete discharge, and is later to Joad for Home. The Port Melbourne has an extended war.'service record, as she has been trooping since September, 1914. In that month she sailed from Australia with tho first contingent of tho Australian Light Korse. Sho remained in tho transport of Australian troops until tho end of 1917, carrying men to tho Mediterranean and India on her return trips. Last year sho played no mean part in tho transport of American troops from New York to Liverpool, and has since mado two trips to .New Zealand, on tho last occasion with troopß. Tho A. and A. steamer Lorain, duo at Wellington 'to-<iay from Auckland, cleared Nev» York on August 3, and Panama on August il. A call was made at Pitcairn Island. The Lorain is practically in ballast trim, as she has only 3500 tons of cargo on board, of which about 600 tons are for Auckland. She is an American standardised ship of 6870 tons gross, and is on hor maiden i voyage. She is owned by the United States Shipping Board, but is chartered by tho A. and A. Line. Sho was launched from tho Federal Shipbuilding Company'a yara, Nov/ Jersey, in January last, and is tho thirteenth ship of her type launched from that yard. Her dimensions are :-Longth, 411 ft.; beam, 58ft.; ai:d loadea draught, 27ft. She is built on ' tho Ishorwood system, and is a most up-to-date typo of cargo carrier. She is an oil burner, driven by Curtis turbines, and corrics about 9700 tons dead weight. For a cargo steamer jho is fairly fast and averages over 11 Itnots. Her best day's run so fnr is 3CO miles. Tho officers and petty officers are berthed m fpaueus '■. rooms on tho bridge-deck, ai.d the iirer-cn and sailors are quartered aft under tho poop. Instead of two forecastles, ono for the 6ailors, and one for tho firemen, she has 14 rooms, seven on each Eidc. Each will accommodate four men. A niCBS room is provided, with up-to-dato conveniences. The Lorain, can be steered by • electric tele-motor, by steam, or by hand. The electric tele-motor is'worked from tho wheclhousa by means of a small handle similar to ' those on tho Westinghouso brake on.tramcars. The, steam and hand gear aro. worked from a -wheelhouso aft. An electric light on tho navigating bridgo can be worked by a handle in the wheelhouse, and turned in any direction from there. The Lorain is also fitted with submarine telephones for detecting the direction of bell-buoys used on tho American and British coasts.' From Wellington the Lorain will go to Brisbane, Sydney, ami Melbourne to, dischargo her cargo, and then will go to Now Caledonia to load oro for America. Captain A. G. The Union Company announced yesterday that the Pateena will, on arrival at Wellington to-day, be withdrawn from tho Onehunga service.
