MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. •By Telegraph—Special Correspondents Masterton, September 9. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held to-night. Several 'remissions of rates were agreed to on tho application of persons in needy circumstances. Councillor Burndge moved and Councillor Atkinson seconded, "That in future no rebates of rates be granted until'after application had been made for their payment by tho Wairarapa Hospital and Chantablo Aid Hoard. Tho motion was carried. . Tho secretary of the Poultry Society, wrote asking that the rent of the Municipal Hall in connection with the recent poultry show be remitted. It was dc-, tided 'to accede to tho request, it being pointed out that tho credit balances after the previous shows' had been, given to patriotic purposes. The Firo Brigade was granted the uso of the Municipal Park for tho annual firo brigade demonstration to be held at Eastertime. Tho Palmerston Borough' Council forwarded a copy of a resolution urging the Government not' to grant loans to soldiers for tho purchasing of houses unless tho money was used to build new houses. Tho resolution was supported. A, proposal to acquire additional laud for the gasworks was referred to a special meeting of tho council. It was decided that Upper Plain residents should not be subject to the resolution passed at a previous council meeting to increase the price of gas by sd. per thousand feet. It was resolved to support that part of a resolution passed by tho Woolston Borough Council dealing with the nationalisation of mines. The portion of tho resolution agreed to recommended the State control of coal mine? and means of transport.
