» A.: Chinaman was brought before a magistrate in a New York court ami received a fine for a slight misdemeanour. Pay itotherwise in gaol! Understand?" The Chinaman signified that lie did not understand, and the magistrato repeated it. "Let me talk with liirn, Your Honour," said the portly officer who had arrested the man. "I'll mako hfm, understand!" When the judge had given him leave tho officer approached the Chinaman and shouted in liis ear: "Sav, you, with tho teakettle face, can't you hear anything? You're got fo pay a two-dollar fine!" | "You some liar allee samee!" cricd the Chinaman, "ifs only one dollar." I
