The death of Mr. Joseph Ivess, veteran journalist and newspaper proprietor, is reported by a Press 'Association .message from Chrislehureli.' Dora in Askeaton, Ireland, in IStt. the late Mr. Ivess afterwards went to Australia with his parents, arrivine in Victoria -in 1852. lie was educated at Burnett's Grammar School, Emerald Hill, Melbourne, and in 18(i8 came across to New Zealand, and engaged in the printing business .011 the West Coast. He devoted much attention to matters'of local interest, and held a seat as Inanguhua representative on tho Nelson Provincial Council until tho abolition of that body in 187-1. Going lo Ashburton in J877, he was elcclcd a member of 1.110 first borough council. Being keenly interested, in politics, lie contested (in 1881) the Wakauui scat, but was unsuccessful. Howerer, on a petition being presented, the election was declared void, and Mr; J. C. Wason unseated. At (he second election .Mr. Ivess defeated Mr. Alfred Saunders, but in 1884 did not succeed against Mir. John Grigg. The latter member'retired alter the first session. and the by-election resulted iu .Mr.' Ivess bcin« returned. He retained iiis' seat, until defeated at the next general election in 1887. It is stated thai the lato Mr. Ivess started forty-five newsPapers in New .South■ Wales and New Zealand.
