Mr. W. J. Durrant, an old and reapect--0,1 settler, died at Hataitai recently. Ho was born in Norfolk, England, in 1847, nnd arrived with his famiiy in Wellington in 1870 in the sailing vessel Waimoa. After a brief residence in Halcombo and Fcildirig ho romovcd to Wellington, en-' tered tlio employ of tlio Wellington Gas Company as engino driver, and remained there for six years. Then ho left for Melbourne, and after a short etay returned to Wellington and entered tho employ of Mr. Thomas Ballinper, with whom ho remained for twenty-nine years, when he had to retire from work in 1912 owing to ill-health. Deceased was choirninster of tho first Church of Christ in Wellington, which position lie held for thirty years. Ho was also well known i'.i musical circles, and was one of the founders of tlio John Knox Lodge, P.A.F.S., of Australia, formed in Welli"lton. Deceased is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters—Mrl W. J. Durrant, of the Public Works Department, Auckland; Mr. B. J. Durrant. of Whitcombe and Tombs, of Wellington: Mrs. B. W. Bird, of the Lower Hutt; and Mrs. J. C. Wilson. n| Nelson. There are twpfvo grandchildren and one great-grnndoliild,
The death has occurred in Christ'cliurch of Mr. Samuel Anstey, at one time one of tho leading amateur florists of the southern city. In Ill's profession as a surveyor he worked for many years in North America, surveying in'the Rocky Mountains, for the transcontinental railways. In the year 1882 he came to New Zealand. Deceased was a native of Con;wall, nnd was educated at King's College, London, being at one time a fellow student of Bishop Julius.
Mr. E. F. Paterson lias been appointed Deputy-Kejistrar of Births and Deaths at the Ilutt.
The Gazette notifies that Mr. John Morrison has beon appointed second assistant registrar of compnnies at Wellington.
Messrs. Donald C. Fraser and P. ,T. O'llara have been appointed inspectors of clubs under tho Licensing Act.
Mr. J. W. A. Heenan has been appointed returning officer for the licensing district of Wellington.
Mr. R. W. Percy has been appointed registrar of electors and . returning officer for the Otaki electorate, and Mr. H. G. Smith has been similarly appointed for Hawke's Bay.
