NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (From Our Special Corresnondentß.J walarapa A special train arrived,at M'asterton yesterday from Cross Creek. It was loaded with coal for the local freezing works. Amateur theatricals in Masterton received a fillip last ovening-, when tlio local operatic society gave a concert, which included items from "Tho Geisha.' 1 Messrs. L. Travers and H. Hall very capably organised the concert, and botn contributed items which were much appreciated. After tho interval opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr. It. J. Young, who has been associated with the Operatic Society and things musical for a great many years. Tho Mayor (Mr. W. H. Jackson), in presenting Mr. Young with a gold watch and silvor teapot on behalf of the citizens, thanked the recipient for the services ho had done in boosting the town and making llio social life 5 generally more- agreeable. Mr. C. l'\ Valtance asked the guest to accept a travelling euit-caso from members of the Operatic Society, and in making the presentation referred eulogisticnlly to tho many good qualities Mr. Young had displayed in his connection with tho society. Mr:-Young,- in responding, -referred to the necessity qi keeping Masterton always before the public eye as a town that was progressive. Mr. Hoskins, of FeiWing. has been appointed custodian of the Greytown Working Men's Club. MNAWATU

At a special meeting at Palmerston of the .fianiDbell Street School Committee Bnd the Ladies' Committee in connection with tho "wace" ball, it was reported that the jztoss receipts were £U7 14s. 7d., and the exnenses lis. Id., leaving a satisfactorv credit balance of iilOl 2s. Bd. This will probably bo increased by further amounts still to come in.

After utilising tho Government subsidy tho actual cost of the pence celebrations to t.hn Palmerston North Borough Council will lie about .£BO. In reporting ttyis at tho Inst council meeting, the Town Clerk said that tho expenditure had vet finally to bo approved by the Government.
During August four births, two marrams. and five deaths were recorded in Otnki.

'J'hfi doath occurred this week at Otaki of Mr. Waalca Naih'a, a well-known tive of the town, who was born there about 45 years ago. Deceased, who leaves a wifo and family, was a quiet, unassuming young man.
