MARTON RACES
BIG STEEPLECHASE WON M j , MATTOCK. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) - Marton,. September 3. There was fine weather and a good attendance for the opening day of the Marton Meeting. The going was on .the heavy side, but it seemed to make no difference to the form. The machine
handled .£21,222, as against £30,777 for the one-day meeting last year. Sweet Tipperary, Cello, Merrie Poto, and Cyra declined their engagement m the Hack Hurdles, and the public selected Yankee Jack, Rio, and Master Boris iii that order. ' The last-named made most of the running from the topweight, but faulty jumping at the Inst two fences spoilt bis chance, and he 1 was beaten into fourth place, Yankee Jack look charge at the last fence and won all out by a head from Combustion. Papanui was prominent at the last fence, but he faded in the turn home. Rio shaped well, but he rail down liis fences and lost a lot of ground None of the others was prominent on the journey.
For the Bellevue Hack Handicap the public selected Egmont Park. Nursing Sister and Tempo, and the trio filled the places. Nursing Sister led till tile last" few yards, where the favourite headed her and won ]>y a. neclc. Tempo was close up, and then came Beloved. The winner is useful and will improve.
Stetson'and Onipoto were the only ones backed in the -Hack Steeples. Deeside fell at the double in front of the stand and brought doiVn Stetson, and Nefische and Aurike were run off. Onipoto then had a big lead, but with a mile to so his rider went inside a peg aud had to pull off. I'atariki then hvon easily front Argo and Mac. Scratchiugs were numerous in the bi|t handicap. The Speaker and Omahu were the favourites on the machine. The Speaker got out well, but was soon steadied, and Penury Rose and Zola led Omahu and The Speaker to the halfmile. Here Oniahn joined the leader and Arrowfield moved up. Entering the straight Omahu was clear of the field and won nicely from Penury Rose, and Zola. Robur was fourth. The winner was well suited bv tho going, and lie had the condition to see out tile distance.
I Gang Awa' was withdrawn from the 1 Victory Steeples, for which all but Cornelian and 'Sensitive were well backed. Cornelian ran off at the:nrst fence, and Want and Sei(sitivo fell at. the next, r-iisfc Line, jumping well, led Mattock till half a mile. from home, when the latter ' went to the ' front and won by fifty yards from Pi-ret Line, witli some-distance away,-and'Mas-ter Webster beaten off. Tha winner ran insitlo a post at the bottom of the but as it wa6 in the last round the judge's verdiot was not altered. Loi'igwi, rider of Want, had his collarbono broken- ', : l'n the Railway Handicap all tho horses were well supported. Sweet Corn and Ermine led into the straight, whore Kipling came from behind; but though I lie settled Ermine he could not reach Sweet Corn, who won nicely. Alu'kfl. who' got left several lengths, finished very fast in fourth place. Sail Home and Sileuus were the most fanpied in tho Bracelet, but an outsider in Khartoum accounted for tfle pair at the finish. MartiiioUo and Metallunn were in front to tho hnlf-nlilc, whSra thefavourito An to.the front, but in the straight he was .challenged by Khartoum, and tho latter won easily in the run home.
